A REAL Debacle

Last week, the U. S. Department of Homeland Security finally issued regulations governing the implementation of REAL ID. The regulations occur after more than three years and multiple missed deadlines. REAL ID creates a national standard for use by the states and territories in issuing driver's licenses and state identification cards. In short, REAL ID creates a national identification card.
So, what did the Bush Administration come up with after three years of inaction? More delay! The Administration's rules require the states to do nothing to implement REAL ID until 2014 (2017 for persons born after 1964). As one observer noted, the Administration kicked the can so far down the road that REAL ID may be an issue for the Administration of Chelsea Clinton or Jenna Bush.
The new regulations, in all seriousness, do nothing to solve the constitutional and privacy problems that are raised by REAL ID. It is time for Congress to act and repeal REAL ID, returning authority to the states for creating more secure identification cards.
