EARLIER this month, the Senate Intelligence Committee and the White House agreed to allow the executive branch to conduct dragnet interceptions of the electronic communications of people in the United States. They also agreed to "immunize" American telephone companies from lawsuits charging that after 9/11 some companies collaborated with the government to violate the Constitution and existing federal law. I am a plaintiff in one of those lawsuits, and I hope Congress thinks carefully before denying me, and millions of other Americans, our day in court. read more »
Corporations' cooperation in spying

It is troubling that the Tribune endorses the notion of Congress "folding" to overt pressure from the White House to pass legislation authorizing massive surveillance of electronic communications by government without a warrant ("Spying and Congress," Editorial, Oct. 17).
After all, a fundamental tenet of our constitutional system is that each co-equal branch of government must be active in weighing the impact of legislation on the rights of the American people. read more »

While supporters of a proposed parental notification law say they will present something to the City Council Government Operations Committee on Tuesday, it may not be the ordinance leaked to the media earlier this month.
In fact, it may not be an ordinance at all, due to state laws that some say prohibit home-rule communities like Aurora from regulating the practice of medicine.
Alderman Rick Lawrence, 4th Ward, drafted the proposal, which would mandate that doctors inform parents or guardians 48 hours before performing any medical procedure on a minor. He released the draft to the media on Oct. 11, and by the end of that week, Alderman Chris Beykirch, 8th Ward, and Alderman-at-Large Richard Irvin had joined him in co-sponsoring the proposal. read more »

As recent allegations of police misconduct hover over departments throughout the region, the Carbondale chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union hosted a forum, "A Citizen's Guide to Surviving Police Encounters" on Thursday night.
The forum, which was included clips of a video and five speakers, took place in the Lesar Law School building as part of the ACLU's biannual meeting. Besides the forum, the group also voted on new officers, approving Lenny Gross as the incoming president. read more »
